The Mellanby Course has been developed to apply the scientific knowledge and research expertise developed within the Mellanby Centre to offer high quality training for clinicians, allied health professionals and laboratory scientists working in the field of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. The course has been delivered twice in the UK as well as at locations across the globe. From 2017 onwards, the National Osteoporosis Society is facilitating the course with support from a panel of experts based at the Mellanby Centre

1974 - 2001: The University of Sheffield's Medical School has a strong track record in basic, translational and clinical bone research. The recent era began with the establishment of the Department of Chemical Pathology in 1974 by Professor Jack Martin and continued as the Department of Human Metabolism and Clinical Biochemistry under the leadership of Professor Graham Russell for 25 years to 2001.
2007: An independent assessment by Evidence Ltd, ranked the University of Sheffield top in the UK (UK Bone Research Report 2017). In agreement with this, ISI Thomson ranked the University of Sheffield number one in the UK and among the top four academic centres in the world for its research into osteoporosis.
2009: The Mellanby Centre for Bone Research (MCBR) was established by The University of Sheffield as a centre for excellence which brings together researchers from the Medical School, the School of Health and Related Research, the School of Clinical Dentistry, the Department of Biomedical Sciences, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
2014: The first Mellanby Centre Training Course: Diagnostic Tests for Osteoporosis was delivered in Sheffield. The course was run again in 2015, also in Sheffield.
2015 - 2017: The Mellanby Course is delivered internationally in Serbia, Madrid and Salsburg.
2017: The National Osteoporosis Society is invited to take on the stewardship of the Mellanby Course and begins working with the Mellanby Course Oversight Group, chaired by Richard Eastell, Professor of Bone Metabolism, Director of the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research, University of Sheffield, UK, to develop the next course.
