Letter from the chairman
This is my annual opportunity to look back on the last year, and to look forward to welcoming you to the Chingford NOS Support Group programme for 2017.
Once again, our hard working Committee ladies organised and helped run five successful events in 2016 and I hope we continued to inform and support you as you live day to day with osteoporosis.
We tread a delicate line as the public face of the NOS, and we uphold the mission of the Charity:
“Working together for a brighter future for people with or at risk of osteoporosis and fragility fractures across the UK. Putting an end to preventable broken bones and helping people to live without pain and disability.”
We are all aware we are in a position of trust and that we are not medically qualified so therefore cannot personally offer specific recommendations for treatments, medicines or doctors.
But what we can do, is give you the opportunity to come along to our meetings where you can meet, listen and learn from the health professionals who have been invited to speak to the Group. Also providing a valuable chance to share your own experiences about osteoporosis.
Our meetings in 2016 :
Medical update with Dr Judith Bubbear, Consultant Rheumatologist – our opportunity to hear about new drug treatments and ask questions etc.
Falls awareness presentation with Tina Sinclair from Age UK Redbridge
Vitamins, minerals and healthy bones – a fascinating presentation by
Dr Amelia Moore, Research Fellow & Osteoporosis Unit Manager, Kings College and Guys St.Thomas NHS Trust
The NOS Helpline – a talk by Rachel Ashcroft- Hands one of the HelpLine nurses based at NOS headquarters, Camerton.
Our Christmas event – music from the delightful Avon House School choir.
Other activities in 2016:
In October, we co-hosted with the NOS a training and information study session for health professionals and GPs – at Whipps Cross hospital.
With help from Dr Bubbear and our NOS development manager Stella Scrivener, over a period of months we put together a programme of eminent speakers who, from the delegate feedback, made the event a huge success.
As always we took part in a valuable net-working session organised by the NOS – sharing ideas with other Support Groups.
Tricia , our Committee Secretary , and Louise Davies gave a presentation at an Allied Health Professional event organised by the NOS about the work of the Support Group.
Looking ahead to 2017:
Our membership at the end of 2016 stood at 92, and we averaged an attendance
of 38 members per meeting.
This is a good manageable number, but we would still like to encourage more members to join us. Please spread the word – a warm welcome awaits!
We hope you will find our programme of events for 2017 will interest present members and hopefully attract some new ones too. You will see that we have something different this year, in that we are intending to make the December meeting especially for those newly diagnosed with osteoporosis, instead of the usual Christmas event.
You will also notice that due to increased costs we have decided to raise our meeting fee to £3 per person, and £4.50 for the summer cream tea.
However, I hope that those of you who come along regularly will agree that we are fortunate to find high calibre speakers, most of whom give their time freely and that the small meeting fee certainly gives value for money!
The National Osteoporosis Society website www.nos.org.uk gives details of all Support Groups and their activities. We try to update our page as often as possible, but if you have any queries please email us at email@example.com or use the contact phone shown on the programme.
Thank you for your support, seeing so many familiar faces and of course new ones at our meetings makes all the hard work worthwhile and we look forward to seeing you in 2017.
